      Managing Part Timers

      Managing Part Timers

As more and more people opt for work life balance the percentage of part time staff has increased. This can have ramifications for the timetable and it is important to reduce this as much as possible. Here are some things to consider:

Limit the number of elective lines a part timer can be in:

Consider setting a limit to the number of elective classes taken by part timers if they are to have full days off. If a part timer is in too many lines and has full days off the spread of lines across the cycle is affected.

Try to place part timers with the same day off in the same line:

Where there are several teacher options for a class try to have the part timers with the same day off teach in the same line. The line can then be scheduled on the days the part timers are working.

Avoid assigning part timers with the same day off to the same core group:

When a core group has several part time teachers all with the same day off, it becomes difficult to schedule classes as there are days where many of their teachers are not available. Reducing the part timers on each core group and ensuring that these teachers have a mix of days off will make it easier to schedule classes with a good spread.

When assigning days off for part timers try to balance the number of staff off each day:

It is understandable that certain days are popular to have off, however, if there are too many staff unavailable on a particular day it leaves the timetable short of teachers and those remaining have full teaching days. This has a flow on effect for Daily Organisation as there are fewer staff available to cover classes.
