Reducing Teacher Changes for Junior Home Groups
Reducing Teacher Changes for Junior Home Groups
Many schools try to minimise the number of different teachers on a single home group in year 7. This is important from a well-being perspective as students adjust to secondary school. The courses themselves remain distinct so that one teacher may cover English/Humanities whilst another covers both Science and Maths for the same home group. Usually, unless your software has a feature to assist, this can only be achieved by hardcoding the teachers to the classes. Here are the things to consider to make this successful:
- Teaching on senior lines: Make sure that the pair of teachers are not also teaching in the same lines. This can make scheduling an impossibility.
- Part timers: If both teachers are part time, make sure that they are not both requesting the same day off.
- Multiple classes: If a teacher is to take multiple year 7 classes, it is important to consider both the points above for both home groups together. For example, if one of the Sci/Maths partners is teaching on one set of senior lines and the other on another, then both pairings should work. On the other hand, if both of the Sci/Maths partners teach on the same set of senior lines, there may not be enough space left for the Eng/Hums for both classes.
